What is Prophecy Mode?

Prophecy Mode is the part of Warrior Cats: Clans of the Forest built most directly around living a Warrior Cats story. Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo and Epic all identify it as one of the game's three game types, alongside Defender Mode and Skirmish Mode. Its official one-line description is unusually important: four original stories about the trials and tribulations of Clan life.

The official Warrior Cats announcement gives that description more shape. It says the turn-based RPG lets players experience four different storylines, one for each of the four warrior Clans. Players train as an apprentice while their Clan struggles under the weight of a new prophecy, explore familiar locations, defend borders, hunt for the Clan, meet characters from the books, create an original cat and follow a destiny connected to StarClan.

Taken together, those details make Prophecy Mode the clearest choice for players who want the role-playing, exploration and narrative side of the game rather than a dedicated survival run or asynchronous player battle.

Four Clans, four full stories

Trailmark describes the campaign structure as 4 Clans, 4 Full Stories. The four playable Clan paths are ThunderClan, RiverClan, ShadowClan and WindClan. According to the publisher, each campaign is shaped by that Clan's culture, conflicts and traditions, with distinct prophecies, rivalries, characters and challenges.

That wording matters because it is stronger than simply saying the game has four selectable factions. Before release, the safest interpretation is that choosing a Clan changes meaningful story content. It does not prove that every quest, location or ending is completely different, but it does establish four separate story campaigns as a headline feature.

This is also why our Clans guide treats Clan choice as more than character flavor. ThunderClan's forest, RiverClan's marshlands, ShadowClan's pine swamps and WindClan's open moors are all represented in the game, and the four story campaigns are explicitly tied to the identities of those Clans.

You begin as an apprentice

The official Warrior Cats announcement specifically says players train as an apprentice. That gives Prophecy Mode a recognizable Warrior Cats starting point: your custom cat is not introduced as an already-established legendary warrior. The story is positioned around learning, growing into Clan life and responding to a new prophecy.

However, several progression details remain unknown. There is no official public level table, apprenticeship duration, warrior ceremony requirement or confirmed list of ranks the player can obtain. It would therefore be premature to publish exact instructions for becoming a warrior, deputy, leader or medicine cat.

What is confirmed is the broader fantasy: create your own cat, join one of the four Clan stories, develop combat skills, hunt, explore, build relationships and experience a prophecy-driven journey.

Prophecies are different for each Clan

Trailmark says players will uncover distinct prophecies in the four campaigns. The publisher also describes choices as influencing the player's personal journey and leading to different story paths.

Those statements support a branching narrative, but they do not yet reveal a fixed technical system for how prophecy choices work. There is no official evidence for a specific number of prophecy stages, a hidden morality meter, a prophecy alignment score or guaranteed ending count. Until the game launches, guides claiming exact prophecy formulas should be treated cautiously.

StarClan is nevertheless an important confirmed part of the experience. Official descriptions say players can uncover the mysteries of StarClan, while Trailmark's combat material also mentions powerful ancestor attacks granted by StarClan. That connects the spiritual side of Warrior Cats to both narrative and gameplay without proving every prophecy mechanic in advance.

Choices, relationships and reputation

Prophecy Mode appears to carry most of the game's role-playing systems. Trailmark says your actions shape relationships, rivalries and reputation. It also says players can form alliances and learn from powerful mentors.

This creates an important distinction between confirmed systems and fan expectations. Relationships and reputation are confirmed; a romance or mate system is not. Mentors are confirmed in the broad feature description; a complete mentor-selection mechanic has not been documented. Story choices are confirmed; an exact branching map is not public.

For players researching the game before launch, that distinction is useful. Clans of the Forest is clearly designed to react to player choices, but we should not turn that into an invented list of endings or relationship thresholds.

Procedural generation means repeat playthroughs can differ

One of the most interesting newer details is that official storefronts say characters, quests and stories are procedurally generated, with the promise that no two playthroughs are the same.

That creates an unusual combination: Prophecy Mode has four clearly advertised original Clan stories, yet parts of the experience are also generated dynamically. The developers have not explained exactly where authored campaign content ends and procedural variation begins.

A reasonable pre-release reading is that the four Clan campaigns provide the narrative framework while procedural systems vary some characters, quests or story situations inside a playthrough. That is an interpretation, not a confirmed technical breakdown, so this guide will be updated once the released game makes the boundaries clear.

Procedural generation could make repeat runs through the same Clan more useful than a conventional fixed campaign, but we do not yet know how much content actually changes.

Combat is part of the story, not a separate minigame

Prophecy Mode is narrative-focused, but combat remains a major system. The overall game uses turn-based battles supporting up to 3 versus 3, with 75 unique combat moves to discover and unlock. Trailmark additionally describes specialized Clan moves, combat stances, enemy weaknesses and StarClan ancestor attacks.

Enemies include rival Clan cats as well as badgers, foxes, Dobermanns and other threats. The official Warrior Cats announcement specifically frames battle around defending Clan borders, while hunting is used to help feed the Clan.

Exactly how often Prophecy Mode forces combat, how party members are selected and whether all story encounters can reach 3v3 remain unknown. See our combat guide for the systems that have been confirmed so far.

Exploration, hunting and Clan life

Prophecy Mode is also where the game's non-combat systems make the most narrative sense. Official descriptions confirm six iconic locations: ThunderClan territory, RiverClan territory, ShadowClan territory, WindClan territory, The Moonpool and The Island.

Traversal includes climbing trees, pouncing through undergrowth, tracking scents and solving environmental puzzles. Players can track and hunt birds, rabbits, squirrels and other prey. Foraging provides materials used to craft items in the den, while customization lets players create their own Warrior Cat from millions of possible combinations.

These features reinforce the idea that Prophecy Mode is not simply a sequence of dialogue scenes separated by battles. It is presented as the broader Clan-life RPG experience, combining story with exploration, hunting, crafting and combat.

Returning characters from the books

Official storefronts say players can interact with nine cats from the book series. The Warrior Cats announcement has publicly named Brightheart, Tawnypelt, Tallstar and Ivypool as examples of iconic characters encountered in the game.

The remaining five have not all been officially identified in the sources we can verify, so this guide does not guess their identities. The game also contains an original cast created for its own stories, which should help Prophecy Mode avoid becoming a simple retelling of an existing novel arc.

See our confirmed characters guide for the current cast list and the difference between returning book cats, original game characters and the custom player protagonist.

Prophecy Mode is not the Prophecy Pack

The similar names can easily cause confusion. Prophecy Mode is a game mode included in the base game. The Prophecy Pack is optional add-on content included with the Feral Edition and sold separately on at least some storefronts.

The Prophecy Pack's currently listed contents are cosmetic and Photo Mode extras, including cat-creator accessories, wearable accessories, a cel-shaded character skin, poses and photo effects. Official storefronts do not describe it as an extra Prophecy Mode campaign.

Buying the Feral Edition therefore should not be presented as a requirement for accessing the four Prophecy Mode stories. See our Feral Edition guide for the edition comparison.

Official trailer

The announcement trailer gives the best broad visual overview currently available for the story-driven experience: custom cats, Clan territories, hunting, exploration and turn-based encounters. There is not yet a dedicated official YouTube tutorial explaining Prophecy Mode's complete rules, so we are using the broader official announcement trailer rather than embedding an unrelated fan-made prophecy video.

What is still unknown before release?

Prophecy Mode has a strong official outline, but many walkthrough-level details remain unpublished:

  • The expected length of each Clan story.
  • The number of major endings or story branches.
  • How procedural quests interact with authored story quests.
  • Whether progress or unlocked moves carry between Clan campaigns.
  • Whether one custom cat can experience multiple Clan stories.
  • Exact apprenticeship and rank progression rules.
  • The complete original character roster.
  • The remaining returning book characters.
  • Whether campaign difficulty can be changed independently.
  • Which choices permanently alter later quests or endings.

These are high-value post-launch guide topics. Until they can be tested, marking them as unknown is more useful than publishing speculative walkthroughs.
